Photo-Essay: Guimarães, Portugal by Sam Scott Schiavo

The City of Guimarães is located in northern Portugal, in the district of Braga, with a population of over 50,000. Guimarães is a 45 minute drive from the popular coastal city of Porto, or an hour-long train ride. According to Wikipedia, the city holds great historical importance and is locally known as “the cradle city” (Cidade Berço in Portuguese), as it is widely believed that Portugal’s first King, Afonso Henriques, was born there. Furthermore, the important Battle of São Mamede was fought close to the city. It is said that the locals are often called “Conquistadores” (the Conquerors).

Photographer Sam Scott Schiavo took a drive out to Guimarães from Porto to produce this short photo-essay of the city. Sam recommends that you:

“Catch the sunset from the hillside at the Pousada de Guimarães – Santa Marinha, the XII Century Augustine Monastery. Magical!”
